According to an article published in the Denver Post, a 23-year-old man parked his SUV in the right lane of Interstate 25 when another car hit him and killed him instantly. Another person who was sitting in the SUV parked on the side of the road was also injured and transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 28 of all highway fatalities are pedestrians. It is extremely important to realize that the shoulder of a heavily traveled roadway is a very dangerous place to be. Cars and trucks often do not expect vehicles to be stopped on the side of the road and tend not to notice them. Further cars and trucks often accidentally drift off the road to the right if they become distracted or lose their focus.
While the number of vehicle fatalities has remained fairly constant over the past ten years, the number of pedestrian fatalities appears to be on the rise. You should only pull over to the side of the road in the event of an emergency. If you to have to pull over, get as far to the right as possible. If the shoulder is extremely narrow all passengers should consider exiting the vehicle and moving farther away from the roadway until the car is ready to move or help arrives.
